EDMONTON – Discovery Agents, the producer of a ‘Made in Alberta’ mobile game app that makes learning fun, physical and interactive for children, introduced its new Mission Builder module today at Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures’ (AITF’s) Edmonton facility.

With Mission Builder, educators and other users can easily customize the Discovery Agents mobile game app to suit their location, subject matter and participants. Discovery Agents is a mobile game that requires children to move in order to play, getting them off the couch and into the great outdoors. The app is available as a free download and can be played at participating sites in Alberta and beyond.

“Discovery Agents is designed to revolutionize education by getting learners to take advantage of the many benefits mobile gaming offers. This innovative platform enables educators to create, edit and manage their content and deliver it to target audiences in a way that is fun, educational and place-based,” says Mary Clark, CEO of Discovery Agents.

In addition to funding from the National Research Council’s Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP), Discovery Agents has received support from AITF to build the company’s market development capability. AITF also connected Discovery Agents to Edmonton-based software developers Pleasant Solutions and STEM education expertise at the University of Calgary to help strengthen the app’s capabilities.

“Discovery Agents makes learning fun and we recognized its potential to help educate the next generation of explorers in Alberta and around the world,” says Stephen Lougheed, AITF’s President and CEO. “Through the addition of the Mission Builder platform, the ongoing success of Discovery Agents also highlights the growth of Alberta’s entrepreneurial technologies sector which is helping diversify and strengthen our economy.”

The app is on the map in a variety of jurisdictions across North America, including:

  • Texas State Parks – piloting exciting Discovery Agents extension Mission Builder
  • U.S. Forest Service is launching several more sites this year of the original game
  • The City of Los Angeles, in partnership with The Coca-Cola Foundation, is launching a conservation adaptation of the original game to add to the ever-growing roster of Mission Sites in North America
  • Across the U.S. in sites found in Washington, California, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Texas and D.C. and soon to be in Maryland and Alaska
  • Calgary – 14 locations of original game including the Calgary Zoo

Discovery Agents received $524,000 in funding support through AITF’s Voucher, Product Demonstration and Industry r&D Associates programs. The National Research Council provided an additional $488,000 in funding support through IRAP.
